Reading Schemes and Phonics

Learning to read is one of the most important skills your child will learn at our school so we put as much energy as we possibly can into making sure that every single child learns to read as quickly as possible. We want your child to love reading – and to want to read for themselves. This is why we work hard to make sure children develop a love of books as well as simply learning to read.

READING SCHEME

As a school, across all key stages, we subscribe to Active Learn Bug Club which allows us access to a wide range of level appropriate books across fiction and non-fiction. Bug Club allows us to follow reading bands in order to assess children’s reading levels against National Curriculum levels. Bug Club allows children to read a range of engaging texts that are appropriate for their level.

GUIDED READING

Guided reading takes place at least 3 times a week where children are given the opportunity to read quality, level appropriate texts and engage in discussions on what has been read. Guided reading is carried out with the class teacher and teaching assistant to ensure that high standard inference questioning is taking place.

PHONICS

Across the Foundation Stage and Key stage 1 we follow the Letters and Sounds scheme. Children learn to recognise letter names and sounds. They learn to blend sounds in order to de-code words at the beginning stages of reading. They progress to understanding sound families and alternative spellings and pronunciations of different graphemes. Letters and Sounds allow children to begin to develop their grammar knowledge through understanding spelling rules and adding suffixes to root words.
